Murder On Tyneside by Eileen Thornton is an intriguing murder mystery with a tip of the hat to Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Agnes grew up in Tyneside and hasn't returned since she moved away with her family at the age of twelve. With her two grown sons now living in Australia, and newly widowed, Agnes decides to spend some time visiting the region of her youth. Agnes loves to watch people and is a great fan of Agatha Christie. So when some jewelry is stolen, she is thrilled. It even gets better when an old school chum, Alan Johnson, is the Chief Inspector in charge of the case. To get reacquainted and have the opportunity to question Alan about the case, Agnes goes out for dinner with him. On their casual walk back to the hotel, Alan and Agnes stumble upon a body. Agnes goes into amateur detective mode to the chagrin of Alan, and endeavors to assist him in solving the two crimes. Agnes's inquiries, although trying to the Chief Inspector's and his colleague's patience, bring results that help them in their investigation. Agnes's persistent snooping is unnerving those around her and Alan is concerned for her safety. Will her constant poking around uncover the murderer and thief or will she be the next murder victim?

Murder On Tyneside by Eileen Thornton is a delightful and entertaining cozy mystery set in a riverside town in England. Agnes's character is still adjusting to being alone. She is a pleasant, middle-aged widow who is interested in people and enjoys observing them as they perform their tasks and how they relate to each other. Being an Agatha Christie fan, Agnes loves solving puzzles created by human folly and deceit. She is a wonderful character, and I hope to meet her again. This is a marvelous murder mystery and will delight cozy mystery fans who remember Miss Marple.
